Residents of the delightful village of Kirdford in West Sussex will soon have their very own village shop! After two years of planning and fund-raising, The Kirdford Community Shop Steering Group has just exchanged contracts on a building located on Rydon Homes’ Bourn Meadows development in the heart of the village.
Legal completion will take place in September after which time, the building, once used as office space by Kirdford Growers and later by Rydon Homes as a sales and site office, is to be fully refurbished and fitted in time for an official opening at the beginning of 2010.
Planning permission has already been granted for a change of use from office to retail, with the shop incorporating a coffee area and a small meeting room for community use. The permitted trading hours will be from 7 am to 8 pm. According to the planning conditions, work needs to be carried out within three years and the materials and finishes selected will complement the Sussex vernacular.
The Kirdford Community Shop Steering Group is raising further funds to help pay for the refurbishment. A Hallowe’en disco is being held at Foxbridge Golf Club and, in the wake of last year’s successful event, another Food Fest will be held at the end of November.
“We are thrilled that all our hard work has paid off and that we’ve raised enough money to buy the premises,” comments Sue Ransley, who has worked tirelessly for the last two years to bring this scheme to fruition. “Over the last year or so, we’ve visited other successful village shops and have listened to advice from those who have set up and run such shops - and we’ll be implementing the best ideas. We’ll continue to raise funds; many people in the village have already bought £10 shares in the shop but once we actually own the shop, we’re sure that even more people will come forward and offer their support.”

I have no doubt that the village shop will be a success and an asset to the village.”
